Defect-free surface states in modulated photonic lattices.
We predict that interfaces of periodically curved waveguide arrays can support a novel type of surface states which exist in a certain region of modulation parameters associated with the band flattening. Such linear surface states appear in truncated but otherwise perfect (defect-free) lattices as a direct consequence of the periodic modulation of the lattice potential. We show that the existen...
متن کاملDefect modes in one-dimensional photonic lattices.
Linear defect modes in one-dimensional photonic lattices are studied theoretically. For negative (repulsive) defects, various localized defect modes are found. The strongest confinement of the defect modes appears when the lattice intensity at the defect site is nonzero rather than zero. When launched at small angles into such a defect site of the lattice, a Gaussian beam can be trapped and und...
متن کاملAccelerating diffraction-free beams in photonic lattices.
We study nondiffracting accelerating paraxial optical beams in periodic potentials, in both the linear and the nonlinear domains. In particular, we show that only a unique class of z-dependent lattices can support a true accelerating diffractionless beam. Accelerating lattice solitons, autofocusing beams and accelerating bullets in optical lattices are systematically examined.
متن کاملSurface solitons in chirped photonic lattices.
We study surface modes at the edge of a semi-infinite chirped photonic lattice in the framework of an effective discrete nonlinear model. We demonstrate that the lattice chirp can change dramatically the conditions for the mode localization near the surface, and we find numerically the families of discrete surface solitons in this case. Such solitons do not require any minimum power to exist pr...
متن کاملLight localization in azimuthally modulated Bessel photonic lattices
We study the propagation and localization of light beams in azimuthally modulated Bessel photonic lattices induced optically in photorefractive crystals; such lattices resemble highly nonlinear micro-structured fibres. We report on the experimental observation of discrete diffraction, nonlinear localization, and subsequent formation of spatial solitons. Our experimental results are confirmed by...
